NASH COUNTY- Sylvia Anothony-McGeachy Named NRMPS Teacher of the Year; Davenport Honda Supports Education with New Honda for Top Educator

Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools recognized twenty-nine outstanding educators during the Annual Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year Awards Celebration. One lucky teacher left the celebration with the keys to a brand new Honda CRV presented by Davenport Autopark.

Over 100 educators and special guests were present at the awards ceremony when the teachers of the year for individual schools were announced: Penny Gardner, Bailey Elementary; Meredith Stokely, Baskerville Elementary; Lakeesha Lynch, Benvenue Elementary; Jami Reams, Braswell Elementary; Brenda Tuten, Cedar Grove Elementary; Kristen Gibson, Coopers Elementary; Ursula Jacob, Englewood Elementary; Imelda Hickman, Fairview Early Childhood Center; Jennifer Laham, M. B. Hubbard Elementary; Jennifer Whichard, D. S. Johnson Elementary; Kimberly Kues, Middlesex Elementary; Iris Hart, Nashville Elementary; Tommy Jones, O.R. Pope Elementary; Betty Powell, Red Oak Elementary; Melissa Latham, Spring Hope Elementary; Paisley Roberson, Swift Creek Elementary; Sylvia Anthony-McGeachy, Williford Elementary; Susan Bass, Winstead Avenue Elementary; Sarah Curzon, George R. Edwards Middle School; Sherill Bateman, Nash Central Middle School; Melonie Pratt, Parker Middle School; Meri Jolin, Red Oak Middle School; Rene Smith, Southern Nash Middle School; Andrea Brown, Nash Central High School; Autumn Crisp, Northern Nash High School; Betsy Hester, Rocky Mount High School; Alyson Machon, Southern Nash High School; Edward Lyons, W. L. Greene Alternative School.

Each teacher of the year will receive $100 from Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools. The three finalists will receive $200 and the NRMPS Teacher of the Year will receive $500.

Three teachers were selected as finalists for NRMPS Teacher of the Year. Melonie Pratt, Media & Information Literacy Coordinator at J. W. Parker Middle School, was chosen as Middle School Teacher of the Year. Betsy Hester, English and Theatre Arts teacher at Rocky Mount High School, was selected as the 2009-2010 High School Teacher of the Year.

Sylvia Anthony-McGeachy, Media and Library Science Coordinator at Williford Elementary School, was named Elementary Teacher of the Year and the 2009-2010 Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools Teacher of the Year. Ms. Anthony-McGeachy received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Old Dominion University, a Masters of Science in Human Resources from the University of Central Texas, teaching certification from Fayetteville State University and a Masters of Science in Library Science from East Carolina University. Ms. Anthony-McGeachy will represent NRMPS at regional Teacher of the Year competition. Each of the finalists for Teacher of the Year received a hand carved crystal apple and $1,000 to be used in their classrooms during Wachovia Bank's Ben Craig Award presentation from Tem Myers, Market President, Wachovia Bank.

Finalists also received personal laptop computers from Rick Isaza, Hospira Site Director, and Bob Jenkins, IT Manager for Hospira.

Sylvia Anthony-McGeachy, NRMPS Teacher of the Year, was presented the keys to a 2010 Honda CRV to use during the year she will serve as teacher of the year from Neill Nelson, Vice President and General Manager of Davenport Auto Park.

The twenty-nine teachers of the year will also be seen on Hwy. 301 South thanks to Mike Cherry and Lamar Outdoor Advertising.

BeBe Wall, Spring Hope Elementary School, was named the NRMPS Principal of the Year. Ms. Wall received a Bachelors Degree in Health & Physical Education and a Masters Degree in Physical Education from Appalachian State University, and a Masters Degree in School Administration from East Carolina University. Before becoming a principal at Spring Hope Elementary School, Ms. Wall was a Health & Physical Education teacher at Southern Nash Junior High, a Physical Education Teacher at Spring Hope Primary and a coach for volleyball, basketball, softball and golf. Ms. Wall has served as assistant principal at Southern Nash High School and principal at Middlesex Elementary School. Ms. Wall will receive $500 from Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools.

The names of both BeBe Wall and Sylvia Anthony-McGeachy will be added to the NRMPS Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year plaques located at the school system's Administrative Offices in Nashville. The recently established plaques were created to honor all NRMPS teachers and principals for their service and commitment to educational excellence.
